Old Brampton & Linacre Reservoirs, near Chesterfield. Thursday 10 August 2006

This 5 mile walk on the edge of the moors taking in the ancient village of Old Brampton and Linacre Reservoirs was organised by Martin.

Details of the walk: START: Royal Oak Inn, Hollins (Nr. Old Brampton) Chesterfield Tel: 01246 568092.
DIRECTIONS: Coming from Chesterfield - take the A619 to Baslow. Take a signed right turn to Wadshelf village.  Go through village on School Lane until you come to a T junction (Wigley village school on your left).  Turn right and the Royal Oak is approx ¼ mile on your left.

WALK:  This was an easy going 5 miles on bridleways and footpaths taking in the ancient village of Old Brampton and around the three scenic Linacre Reservoirs where there is plenty of shade if it is very hot.  The walk enjoys good views with only a couple of gradual ascents.  Good underfoot but nettles are a problem in a couple of sections … so shorts only are not recommended!! See map below for the route.

16 members attended and several arrived at the pub in time for coffee. An accident at junction 28 of the M1 forced many people onto a variety of A roads and cart tracks where tractors, white vans and council cones lay in wait. (David Knight arrived after the group had set off and heroically did the whole walk on his own.)

When the walk eventually started we had another first: a tractor moving at 1mph and blocking the whole track so that we had to saunter behind it.

The rain held off fortunately and after a minor shortening of the route we arrived back at the Royal Oak in time for an excellent lunch. The fish was especially popular and filled the plates very well (see pic.) and the treacle sponge was one of the better versions.
A notable achievement during this walk was that after many years of searching we finally found the last mobile showroom! (see photo) The two staff commented "What do you mean, we've been sold?"
