Another Turner/Newton production saw a record turnout of 19 members with Clive Ellis joining for lunch. The weather order went a bit awry though, thick fog persisted all morning and cut the views to yards not miles. The fog lead to some eerie views, especially around the eco warriors encampment.
The Grouse & Claret must be the biggest pub we've visited. We were served individual filter coffee on arrival and then, to everybody's delight: masses of bacon butties. The food was surprisingly cheap though - there was a 2 for £10 offer - and it was good quality too.
The walk, as Martin promised, was a gradual ascent for about two miles. With a winding path and reduced visibility though the top was never in view - every bend produced yet another uphill stretch.
START POINT: Grouse and Claret, Rowsley Nr. Bakewell, Derbyshire
DE4 2EJ Tel: 01629 733233
DIRECTIONS:
An easy one to find!! The Grouse and Claret is a large pub on the main A6 at Rowsley some 5 miles past Matlock and 3 miles from Bakewell.
If approaching from Matlock the Grouse and Claret is on the right hand side of the main A6 approximately 100 yards past the B6012 turning for Chatsworth and is next to the main bridge over the River Derwent.
WALK:
Approximately 5 miles of level and up and down walking which was tested by Keith and myself on Tuesday. From Rowsley we make our way up to Stanton Moor – this is a longish climb but there are no steep sections at all and Hilary (founder member of the renowned ‘Flat Walks Only’ Club) has in the past made it easily! Stanton Moor is full of prehistoric remains and the approaches house an Eco Warriors’ Enclave … you will see for yourself. (Click here to see a larger version of the map)
We return to Rowsley via Stanton in the Peak with marvellous views over the Wye Valley, Haddon Hall and the Derbyshire Hills.
