Ashford in the Water & Monsal Dale, Derbyshire Thursday 16 August 2012

Gentlemen, its time once again, for us to put on those walking boots and head off on a r…amble round the Derbyshire dales.  Let’s hope the better weather of recent days returns!  Details of the walk are as follows:

TIME: 10.00am assemble for tea/coffee at the Aisseford Tea Room with walk to start at 10.30am.  Don’t panic we’ve not gone teetotal yet, the Ashford Arms where we are having lunch doesn’t open until 12.00 noon!!

START POINT: Aisseford Tea Room, Church Street, Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire
                           DE45 1QB tel: 01629 812773 (Next door to the Bull’s Head pub)

LUNCH VENUE: The Ashford Arms (about 50 yards from Aisseford Tea Room), Church Street, Ashford in the Water DE45 1QB tel: 01629 812725.

DIRECTIONS:
Ashford in the Water is just off the main A6 from Bakewell to Buxton.  It can also be reached from Chesterfield via A619 to Baslow and A6020 to Ashford.  There is plenty of parking on the roads near the Tea Room and the Church.

WALK:
Approximately 4½ miles in total - across fields to Monsal Head (Viewpoint and breather stop) then return to Ashford on the High Peak Trail and footpaths via Monsal Head viaduct and recently opened Headstone Tunnel (about ¼ mile long and fully lit).  This is a relatively gentle walk, having great views, with just one steep, short descent from Monsal Head to the viaduct (a walking pole for this section will be useful).  There can be a few muddy patches dependent upon rainfall and there are nettles to negotiate so ‘shorts wearers’ beware!
