Papplewick, Notinghamshire Thursday 22 November 2012

team photoMeet at the Griffins Head, Papplewick, at our usual time of 10.00 for a 10.30 am start. Papplewick is on the B6011 a few miles north of Nottingham.

The walk itself is just over 5 miles of undemanding, mostly flat, well trodden paths and roads – absolutely ideal for this time of the year. The route is initially along a railway cutting which follows the path of the Great Northern Railway, now part of the National Cycle Network, then through the magnificent grounds of Newstead Abbey, originally an Augustinian Priory built in 1170 but best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. Then along wide grass paths, past Papplewick Hall to the Griffins Head for aperitifs and canapés.

I shall be grateful if you would let me know by Monday 19th November whether you will be joining us. However, since I shall be away for a few days  please don’t try to contact me by phone between the 8th and 15th November. Emails, no problem, I check my inbox on a daily basis, wherever I am. If you have any queries about the arrangements while I’m away, then please contact Martin Turner.

The simplest way, coming from north or south, would be to travel up or down the M1 motorway, leaving at Junction 27, turning right onto the A606 towards Annesley and Mansfield.
After a couple of miles turn right again onto the A611, heading towards Hucknall and Nottingham.
Just before you get to Hucknall turn left at roundabout onto the B6011 signposted towards Linby and Papplewick. The Griffins Head is on the right at a crossroads in the village and has plenty of parking space at the rear. Both roads going past the pub though can be quite busy, so please take care when turning into the car park. For those satnavvers who wish to sort their own route, the pub postcode is NG15 8EN.
The telephone number is 0115 963 3672 and they have a website: www.griffinshead.co.uk.
