who meet regularly to walk in various parts of the east midlands.

Ashover nr Chesterfield, Thursday 8th March 2012

team photoA quality, as opposed to quantity turnout this time. Nine members took part. (Team photo by David Knight - with a fairly unusual (for us) background this time!) A new starter this time - Graham Godley, (middle, background) ex- Finance and recently retired from BG.

It was arranged by Martin: This walk is not my intended walk location, earlier options being rejected because of difficult terrain and pub closed!!  Our venue will again be the Olde Poets’ Corner in Ashover, which we last visited and thoroughly enjoyed in 2009 See Report & Photos (organised by George, Gerry and David).

You may recall it has its own micro brewery which we toured and sampled!!  It has an excellent selection of good pub food and real ales … this will be especially so on 8th of March as it’s the start of their annual beer festival … so duty drivers hard luck (will it be Gerry? Hilary will be conveying Keith and I there and BACK).

Details of the walk are as follows:

VENUE: The Olde Poets’ Corner, Butts Road, Ashover Derbyshire S45 0EW Tel: 01246 590888  Website: www.oldpoets.co.uk

DIRECTIONS:  Coming from the south along the M1, leave the motorway at Junction 28. On the slip road, get into the inside lane and turn left at the roundabout (1st exit) along the A38, signposted Derby. After about 2 miles, leave the dual carriageway, signposted Alfreton A61, and at the roundabout at the end of the slip road take the 3rd exit onto the A61. This will take you through Alfreton, following the signs towards Chesterfield. After about 5 miles, bear left onto the Ashover Road - B6014, signposted Tansley. After about 1 mile this road continues as the Ashover New Road - B6036 which takes you into Ashover. The Old Poets' Corner is on your left as soon as you enter the village.  There is some parking at the pub, but probably not enough for everyone. However, there is plenty of unrestricted parking on the road opposite the pub (up the hill).
WALK:  The walk will be approximately 4½ miles around the village and surrounding countryside, treading mostly different terrain from last time.  The walk offers plenty of history, good views and is easy going walking with no serious climbs.
