Aston on Trent, Derbyshire, Wednesday 24th January 2018

Details of the walk:

Start from The Malt Pub. About 5 miles long, much of it alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal. The meeting time is our usual one of 10.00 am for a 10.30 am start.

The simplest route is via the M1, leaving at Junction 24 if you’re coming from the south and Junction 24a if you’re coming from the north. Take the A50, signposted Stoke, Derby, Lockington, Castle Donington, Shardlow. Leave the A50 at the first exit and follow the sign for Shardlow. Go over the ‘one way’ bridge at Shardlow Marina and keep straight on until you get to the ‘Dog and Duck’ pub on your left hand side. Turn left, signposted Aston on Trent, and it’s a straight road into Aston. Turn right onto The Green (one way). You’ll see The Malt in front of you, with parking at the rear.

Nine members joined this walk and braved the potential deluge. Conditions underfoot were very wet especially along the towpath but there was no heavy rain during the walk.

George arrived without boots and was saved by landlady Laura getting her mother's boots.
